Star in the making

EVERY year Gordon Tietjens unveils a new star at the Wellington 7s.

Players such as Victor Vito, Frank Halai and Julian Savea have all made a recent impact.

Now, 18-year-old Akira Ioane could be the next star after being named in the 12-member New Zealand squad.

"I have some good experienced players around him; DJ Forbes, Tomasi Cama and Tim Mikkelson who can assist a player during game time," Tietjens said.

The former Auckland Grammar student was named in the New Zealand squad for Las Vegas but missed out because of visa problems.

Now he will get his chance to shine on the big stage.
