RED Beard One held on to the Raiwaqa Volleyball Association challenge title by beating Somosomo yesterday.

Red Beard won the title from former holders, Mighty Derricks by two straight sets in the challenge match at Eds Court in Raiwaqa last Saturday and then yesterday beat Somosomo by 2-1.

Association official Erami Rasaubale said they also had a knockout tournament apart from the challenge match.

X defeated Somosomo Giants 2-1 to win the knockout competition.

"In the semi-finals, X beat Groundsmen 2-1 and Somosomo beat Stunts 2-0 and then in the final, X proved too strong for Somosomo," he said.

"X won the first set and then Somosomo won the second and then X won the deciding set.

"That was how the challenge match went with Red Beards winning."

Rasaubale said even though the Association didn't have any sponsor, they gave out cash prizes to the winners.

"The challenge match is the main feature in the weekly club competition and so apart from the challenge trophy, the winner got $100 and the knockout winner got $80.

"We are looking for sponsors but in the meantime we will continue to give out prizes to the winners."

He added the door was still open for other interested clubs to join the association.

"The standard of competition has improved and we are looking forward to better performance from the participating clubs in the upcoming weeks.

"Also we don't have any womens competition right now but there is interest from a few clubs so we will have a competition for them once we have more than three clubs.
