Update: 12:02PM THE DISTRICT Officer Nadi has ordered the evacuation of Nadi Town.

Jiuta Waqavonovono has issued instructions for businesses to close and for people to cease any travel into the town area.

"We are expecting a strong backflow from high tide at 1pm and due to the Nadi River already surpassing the critical level of 4.6m, I have issued instructions that the town be immediately evacuated," he said.

Nadi special administrator Robin Ali said 80 per cent of businesses had taken precautions earlier and shut down.

Evacuation centres in Nadi are filling up and official numbers would be released shortly.
