Guilty of defilement

Shalveen Chand
Thursday, January 30, 2014

THE High Court has acquitted a teacher of the rape of a fifth former but convicted him of defilement.

The teacher was also charged with an alternative count of defilement.

Justice Paul Madigan summed up the case to the three assessors yesterday afternoon.

After more than an hour, the assessors returned with their opinion — a unanimous verdict of not guilty for rape, however, all agreed defilement had taken place.

The case will be called on Monday for mitigation and sentence submissions.

He was taken into custody yesterday.
