RIYAZ Khan could not believe what he saw when he found his mother's lifeless body in the kitchen of their Nakavu home in Nadi.

Yesterday, the 20-year-old was still in a state of shock from his discovery on Monday afternoon.

"I was away from home most of the day but when I left home my mother was alive and well," he said.

"It gutted me to find her like that."

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said Hamida, 50, was allegedly attacked after a dispute with a relative.

She said police were still searching for a 34-year-old nephew of the deceased who is the suspect.

Mr Khan told The Fiji Times his mother was alone at home when he left for a cousin's home earlier that day.

"When I returned I saw that our front door was partly open," he said.

"I did not go inside because I thought one of our relatives was visiting my mother, so I went to my cousin's house next door.

"I was talking with my cousin and we were sitting outside when I noticed the front door was now completely open."

He said upon investigating he found a relative sitting inside the house.

"I was surprised to see him there and I noticed he had a cut on one of his fingers and had blood on his face.

"I asked him what happened but he did not say anything. He then asked me to go and buy him some beer."

He said he refused as he wanted to prepare for work.

"I had to work the night shift so I wanted to go and change but my cousin kept insisting that I go and get him some alcohol.

"He had stopped me from going to the room so I finally agreed but I first wanted to go to the washroom.

"I went to the kitchen and felt something was not right.

"I could see old tyres that used to be stacked under the kitchen table had been moved.

"I went under the kitchen table and could feel that it was sticky and wet and when I moved one of the tyres I could see my mother's body."

He added the relative had fled the scene when he tried to question him about what had happened to his mother.

"I went back and kept trying to revive her but she did not open her eyes."

According to police, the victim was pronounced dead when taken to hospital.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said a team had been tasked to lead the investigation and search for the suspect.

Investigations are continuing.
