Update: 6:00PM THE Australian Government is optimistic its relationship with Fiji will further improve this year.

Australia's acting high commissioner to Fiji, Glenn Miles says Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has made it clear that she wants to normalise relations as Fiji moves towards elections in 2014.

Mr Miles said there had been an improvement in relations last year because of the path Fiji has taken towards elections, unveiling of the new Constitution and the appointment of the Electoral Commission.
