ROME - Chelsea's Ghanian international midfielder Michael Essien has joined AC Milan, the Italian Serie A side announced yesterday. Essien, 31, arrives on a free transfer having signed an 18-month deal with the northern outfit placed 11th in Serie A, Italian press reported. Essien is the first recruit of new Milan coach Clarence Seedorf.
BERLIN - Bayern Munich went 10 points clear in the Bundesliga yesterday with a convincing 2-0 win at third-placed Borussia Moenchengladbach to extend their record unbeaten run to 42 matches. Tsegaye Mekonnen Asefa won the men's race in 2 hours, 4 minutes and 32 seconds, 41 seconds ahead of Markos Geneti Guteta, with Girmay Birhanu Gebru a further 36 seconds back in third.
NYON, Switzerland - Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is taking on a role with European football's governing body as a coaching ambassador, UEFA president Michel Platini said yesterday. Ferguson, 72, had a record-breaking 26-and-a-half-year tenure at Old Trafford before retiring at the end of last season after winning his 13th league title with the club.
LONDON - Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn says the IBF has ordered a rematch between Carl Froch and George Groves following their controversial super-middleweight title fight in November. Froch retained his WBA and IBF titles with a ninth-round stoppage against Groves in Manchester on November 23.
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas - Jessica Korda took the second-round lead in the season-opening Bahamas LPGA Classic, birdieing four of her last seven holes in high wind yesterday for a 7-under 66. The 20-year-old Korda had an 11-under 135 total on Atlantis Resort's Ocean Club course. She won the 2012 Women's Australian Open for her lone LPGA Tour title.
VIGO, Spain - Forward Fabian Orellana scored two goals as Celta Vigo beat bottom-place Real Betis 4-2 in the Spanish league yesterday, ruining the debut of coach Gabriel Calderon. Betis hired Calderon on Monday, its third manager of the season, after Juan Carlos Garrido was fired.
MOSCOW - Russia's Football Union (RFU) says it has extended its contract with national squad manager Italian Fabio Capello until the end of the 2018 World Cup, which Russia will host. No financial details of Capello's new contract were disclosed. The 67-year-old Capello guided Russia into the 2014 World Cup finals.
