Update: 10:40AM A 37-YEAR-OLD farmer of Ligaulevu Village on Mali Island in Macuata is believed to be the country's latest drowning victim.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro this morning said the victim went diving alone yesterday around 8am but failed to return home.

"After he failed to return home, a search was conducted with four fellow villagers travelling in a fibre-glass boat to look for the victim," Ms Naisoro said.

"At about 100 metres out in the open sea, they discovered the victims body and spear gun floating."

She said police were investigating the incident.

The drowning toll stands at five compared to six for the same period last year.
