DEFENDING champions Raiwai I got off to a good start in the 2014 Joe Vulaca Junior Volleyball Championship at the FMF Gymnasium in Laucala Bay.

The side defeated Nadawa and Vatuwaqa III by two straight sets respectively, in the men's grade competition yesterday.

Other team that is on song is 2DayFM Suva which overcame Raiwaqa I 2-1 and Raiwai IV 2-1.

Security Forces I also displayed a powerful performance in the pool stages beating USP I and Nadawa II 2-1 and 2-0, respectively.

Fiji Volleyball Federation administrator Kenneth Lidise was impressed with the competition level but said it was too early to predict the outcome.

He said the title contenders would emerge after the elimination rounds early today.

"Performance has been outstanding by some of the teams. Top seeded teams are playing to expectation but some teams like Raiwaqa, who are making a comeback, are doing well."

Lidise said they were expecting equally tough games in the women's competition which starts today at 8am.

He said teams like Suva and Security Forces were the top contenders.

Twenty three men's and 10 women's teams are taking part in the Vulaca Championship which ends today.
