Update: 12:39PM GIFTS and contributions from abroad were major sources of remittances to Fiji last year, says central bank deputy governor Inia Naiyaga.

He said they projected to receive about $309.4million from inward personal remittances for 2013.

Cumulative to October last year, remittances were $270.6m, around 6.9 per cent higher than the same period in 2012, he said.

Mr Naiyaga said the gifts and contributions were from former citizens, friends, family and Fiji citizens working abroad such as peacekeepers, nurses, caregivers and sportsmen among others.
