Cane farmer amazed at rare pineapple find

WHAT a sugarcane farmer initially regarded as a bunch of pineapple leaves in his farm shocked him when it later developed into 42 pineapples on one stalk of pineapple plant.

Mangal Singh, 71, said he was surprised to see the plant develop into nothing but a bunch of pineapple leaves.

"I thought the pineapple would develop into a later period of maturity and this was not the case," he said.

"Imagine when I came across the strange plant and saw that instead it was a collection of mini-pineapples on one stalk of pineapple plant.

"When it had grown quite big I counted and learnt that I had 42 mini pineapples on that one plant."

Mr Singh said this was the first time he had ever encountered such a strange phenomenon on his farm.

"I am a sugarcane farmer but I plant a bit of pineapple for our own use.

"The farm we currently live in belongs to my elder brother's son who is away in Suva."

Mr Singh's grandson, Adharsh Singh said the pineapple looked really weird after he saw it while working with his grandfather on their small pineapple farm during the holidays.
