Sad loss

LONDON - The father of Formula One driver Jenson Button, who helped launch his son on the path to becoming a world champion, has died aged 70.

John Button, who oversaw his son's rise from kart drive to 2009 Formula One world champion, was found dead at his home in the south of France on Sunday following a suspected heart attack.

Sacked

MILAN - Former AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri and Livorno handler Davide Nicola have become the seventh and eighth coaching casualties of the Serie A season.

Allegri was dismissed on Monday, a day after a 4-3 league defeat to league newcomers Sassuolo, which left the seven-time European champions 30 points adrift of leaders Juventus.

Spared

LONDON - Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew was spared disciplinary action by the Football Association on Monday following his expletive-laden touchline rant during Sunday's 2-0 defeat by Premier League leaders Manchester City.

However, the governing body said Magpies boss Pardew had been "reminded of his responsibilities".

Rift settled

ZURICH - Cristiano Ronaldo's rift with FIFA President Sepp Blatter was settled in a telephone call. "This is no longer an issue, neither for us nor for football," the Ballon d'Or favourite from Portugal said ahead of Monday's award ceremony.

Top 4

MADRID - Villarreal enhanced their prospects of playing Champions League soccer next season with a 5-1 thrashing of Real Sociedad on Monday at El Madrigal.

Sociedad had come into the game on the back of five straight Spanish league wins, but a double from Giovanni dos Santos - added to a strike from Nigerian Ikechukwu Uche - had the hosts 3-0 up inside 33 minutes.

Panthers start

SYDNEY - Penrith recruit Jamie Soward is set to make his debut in Panthers colours at the NRL Auckland Nines next month and could spearhead the club to victory in the inaugural tournament.

The always controversial playmaker is keen to play at the Eden Park event and with his blinding speed and astute kicking game shapes as one of the key players of the Nines.

Cavs crushed

SACRAMENTO, California - Isaiah Thomas scored 26 points and the Sacramento Kings won their third straight game with this NBA season's biggest rout, a 124-80 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday.

The Kings scored 16 straight points in the third quarter and led by 28 points heading into the fourth.

Walker wins

HONOLULU, Oahu - Adam Scott came within one shot of the lead early on the final day of the US PGA's Sony Open, but it mattered little as Jimmy Walker pulled away with three late birdies in a remarkable seven-under 63 to win the event in Hawaii.

Masters champion Scott, in the first group on the back nine, went out in 30 and was one shot out of the lead as the final group began their rounds.
