Book prices drop

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

MORE good news for parents as a Consumer Council of Fiji survey has found a decline in the price of exercise books since last year.

Council CEO Premila Kumar said the survey was based on 167 exercise books sold in 28 shops/supermarkets around Suva, Lautoka and Labasa.

"Price was compared with 2013. Out of the total of 167 books, 54 (32.3 per cent) had dropped in price, while 43 (25.7 per cent) had increased. There was no change in 70 (41.9 per cent) comparable exercise books," Mrs Kumar said.

She said the highest drop was by 45cents for a 200-page lecture pad, which used to be $2.05 in 2013 but has dropped to $1.60.

"The council's 2014 surveys in major retail outlets in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa found exercise books to be generally cheaper in the major supermarkets."

Mrs Kumar said while some significant price reductions were noticed, parents have been advised to do comparative shopping.

"The council is advising parents and students not to restrict their purchases to one outlet, but compare prices and spread their shopping. This will help them stretch their hard earned dollars and ensure all their children's school needs are catered for."

She said the council found that in most urban centres, retail outlets selling exercise books were within walking distance.

"This makes it convenient for consumers to simply walk across and check prices for at least three outlets.

"Some consumer-focused retailers are displaying detailed price lists which are helping parents and their children make comparisons.

"The council encourages retailers to assist by making price lists available and visible to parents."
