Wardens march on to retain Uluinakau title

TWO early tries in each spell of the game steered Wardens Gold to pocket $5000 at the Uluinakau 7s tournament in Nausori yesterday.

The Sevuloni Rakula-captained side edged Yamacia 14-12 in the Cup final at Ratu Cakobau Park.

Rakula was inspirational and led his team well, opening the scores with a runaway try in the opening two minutes of the match.

Mosese Radreu was successful with the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

The Navosa-based Yamacia side made a strong comeback in the latter stages of the opening half, led by skipper Ropate Labalaba who scored a double to put his side ahead 12-7 at the break.

However, it was Kalivati Roko's try and the extra points from Radreu early in the second half that proved to be the match winner.

And tireless defence from the Wardens players kept Yamacia at bay despite several attacks that split the Wardens defence.

Yamacia's playmaker and player of the tournament Luke Navuwai tried several of his tricks to penetrate the brick wall of defence but was unsuccessful.

Wardens skipper Sevuloni Rakula said it was a well deserved victory for his troops. "We sacrificed Christmas and new year celebrations while preparing for this tournament and I believe it paid off in full," he said.

"I thank God for the win and my players for a great performance.

"Yamacia played well and gave a good contest but my boys maintained their composure so hats off to them."

Wardens Gold beat Red Rock 12-7 in the semi-finals while Yamacia defeated Lomaiviti One 14-10.
