Locals apply for top job

DEFENCE Minister Joketani Cokanasiga says "a lot of local people" have applied for the police commissioner's post.

Mr Cokanasiga said majority of the applicants were locals.

He said no time frame had been given on the appointment date, and the Constitutional Offices Commission was still working on the matter.

"I have not heard from the Constitutional Offices Commission, I am waiting for that too," Mr Cokanasiga said.

Deputy Commissioner Ravi Narayan is Acting Commissioner after being appointed by Mr Cokanasiga in accordance with Part B Section 129 (6) of Chapter 6 of the Constitution.

Mr Narayan's appointment came into effect on September 18 and will run until a new commissioner is appointed.

An earlier statement issued by the Information Ministry said the term of former commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua expired in September.

Brigadier Naivalurua did not seek reappointment.
