Clean-up to combat dengue

THE Health Ministry is concerned that the current dengue 3 virus may cause severe illness.

Communicable disease national advisor Dr Mike Kama says it's been a while since the strain has been detected in Fiji.

"And with its current stance, it may cause severe illnesses to some extent," Dr Kama said.

"It's not just the numbers that tell the story, in this case we look at the mosquito density, we look at the environment, ecological conditions — these are the elements we put together."

Meanwhile, a major clean-up is planned for the Central Division on Thursday, January 16.
