Bridge expected to open today

THE recently-closed Vunidilo bridge in Wailoku is expected to be open to light traffic later today.

This was confirmed by Fiji Roads Authority yesterday.

Earlier this week, the authority closed the bridge after engineers identified serious corrosion in the bridge's supporting steel beams.

FRA acting chief executive Dale Nicholls said despite the development, only small vehicles and pedestrians would be able to use the bridge.

He said engineers were continuing with work to assess the possibility of the bridge accommodating heavy vehicles and buses.
