+++Poor ventilation

THE current hot weather, coupled with the poor ventilation in the holding cell below the courthouse in Suva, has prompted the police's prison management team to allow remand prisoners to stay outside the cell block but still inside the secure grilled doors.

According to the judiciary, there are plans to renovate the cell block.

Man free to go

A YOUNG man has been discharged by the Suva Magistrates Court after the complainant withdrew the allegations against him. Nilesh Singh was charged with theft for allegedly stealing diesel.

The offence took place at the construction site of the new remand centre. Three other people involved in the incident have been convicted.

Bench warrant

A COMPLAINANT had his bench warrant cancelled after he told the court he never received the summons.

The police prosecution said their file showed a summons was received but the complainant failed to sign.

The court said the summons was served two days prior to the hearing when the date was set well before.

Second chance

A WOMAN charged with theft did not appear in court and has been given another chance.

Repeka Navuga's lawyer said her client was mistaken about the date as two contradicting dates had been given to Ms Navuga.

The court said the case would be called and Ms Navuga has to be present or she would be remanded.
