AVIKASH Lal has made it a habit to win races organised in his home-town of Nadi.
Yesterday, he won the Jet Runners Club-organised New Year's 5km Road Race to add another title to his growing list of victories.
The 18-year-old won the open men's race in a time of 17 minutes five seconds ahead of Ravnil Kumar who finished the race in a time of 17 minutes 59 seconds. Shiraz Ali was third with a time of 18 minutes 38 seconds.
Club president Abinesh Kumar congratulated Lal on his victory and said he would train him for the 2015 Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.
"Last year, he (Lal) won all the races that the club had organised and he even won the Olympic Day Fun Run," he said.
"Unfortunately, he missed out on a spot in the national athletics team to the Mini South Pacific Games in Wallis and Futuna last year.
"But he is still young and I want to train him to compete and win a medal in long distance events at the next Pacific Games."
In the other categories, Shivneel Sharma took out the secondary schools boys event with a time of 20 minutes 32 seconds.
Waisea Naitei and Akesh Kumar were second and third respectively with a time of 24 minutes one second and 24 minutes and 35 seconds.
Shyna Verma won the secondary schools girls 3km event with a time of 17 minutes and 59 seconds while Ekta Verma was the surprise package of the event when she finished the primary schools girls 3km event ahead of some senior competitors with a time of 17 minutes and 51 seconds.
The veterans 3km male event was won by Lal's father, Parshotam, with a time of 11 minutes and 54 seconds while the female event was won by Padmani Lal who ran a time of 18 minutes and 30 seconds.
"Also we would like to thank Dr Ayoade Olatunbosun-Alakija for coming all the way from Suva to show her support for our event," Kumar added.
