THE first ever street party in Labasa Town was a success as about 1000 people crowded the main street to welcome 2014.
Colourful fireworks lit up the sky above the town as the crowd cheered and clapped along with the countdown to the new year.
The last minute decision by the Labasa Town Council was never regretted as special administrator Vijay Chand thanked the residents for their support.
"We made a decision on Monday because we thought it was only good and proper to organise something for the people of Vanua Levu," he said.
"So we thought of a street party because other towns would also have one. And I don't regret the decision — I am so happy.
"We saw families in town also cheering and dancing to the music, so I am glad that everyone who turned up enjoyed themselves."
Mr Chand said seeing the people at the street party laughing and dancing brought him satisfaction.
"Making a last minute decision for such a celebration involving the public is not easy but I am glad I took the step and brought Labasa together," he said.
