WHILE many people winded down their Christmas celebrations at picnic spots on Boxing Day, villagers in the highlands got together to raise funds for village projects.

The villagers of Nasukamai, including those with their roots there but living outside, got together for a day of fun and entertainment.

Nasukamai Village is situated in the interior of Rakiraki and is about 25 kilometres from the Kings Rd, through the Barotu Rd if travelling down from Tailevu.

Village chairman Paula Kubu said they aimed to raise $20,000 but when the fundraising closed on Boxing Day, they had collected $33,858.

Mr Kubu said the villagers were divided into groups that presented queen contestants.

"The fundraising was opened by the Taukei Drana, Sikeli Kasami, with a $5000 donation and closed by Ratu Natauia, Adi Sereima Adidave, with a $2200 donation," he said.

"It was held to raise money to upgrade our village hall and the catering facilities there. From the amount raised, we set aside $10,000 for our electricity scheme, $1000 for provincial levy and some for the church.

"We have $18,000 left which we will deposit in the bank and do another fundraising to raise money to upgrade the village hall and other projects."

The villagers sat in tents and spent Boxing Day drinking kava and cheering the different groups as they made their way to give their contribution.

The fundraising ended just after 1pm.
