A WOMAN, whose husband died when the car he was in plunged into a river last year, has put up a cross to mark the spot where he died.
While putting the cross in memory of her husband Krishna Swamy Naidu, Akashni Naidu said it would remind motorists of the dangers of the area.
Mrs Naidu put up the cross at Vakabalea in Navua on New Year's Eve and placed a wreath with her younger son Vihaan.
Mr Naidu went missing on June 19 last year while on a business trip from Suva to Lautoka.
His workmate Ella Blakelock was with him and a major search was carried out for the missing duo throughout the country. It was not until July 19 that their car was found submerged in the river at Vakabalea.
Police retrieved the car from the river after carrying out investigations and removing the decomposed bodies from it.
"I've put the cross there in memory of my husband and to remind motorists that it is a dangerous spot," Mrs Naidu said.
"Some people have died there, including my husband, and I would not want anymore lives to be lost there. Since there are no road humps at the spot or railings, the cross may help save lives by way of making drivers slow down."
Following the accident, the authorities put reflector posts on the roadside near the bridge.
