Update: 2:21PM POLICE have heightened their new years operations following the extension of opening hours for nightclubs in the North.

Divisional Police Commander North Senior Superintendent Naulumatua Lutunacaucau confirmed that Fusion Nightclub in Labasa, Planters and Uros nightclub in Savusavu had been given approval to open until 3am.

In Christmas, we only had Pontoon nightclub in Labasa and the Tavern allowed to open until 3am but now we have another three spots allowed to open until 3am so we have also increased our visibility team on the ground, he said.

Our Christmas was a safe celebration with no extra ordinary activities and we want the same for the new years celebration.

Police operation will be tight and we will not tolerate any drunk driving cases.

We have a full team out this new years day and we will work in shifts here in Labasa, Seaqaqa, Savusavu, Taveuni and other stations in the North.

SSP Lutunacaucau said police would also patrol residential areas outside towns.
