PRANEEL Singh received the Player of the Year award at the Southern Division Billiards and Snooker Association (SDBSA) awards night on December 6 at the Nausori Club.
Singh's selection for the award generated some criticism from the association members.
The selection panel included outgoing president Timoci Gaunavinaka, Viliame Umu, Singh, Roheet Nand and Ravi Narayan.
Gaunavinaka said Singh deserved the award as he was chosen unanimously by the panel.
"The Southern Division Billiards and Snooker Association Tournament Player of the Year is based on the performance of players in SDBSA tournaments," he said.
"That must never be mixed up with players' performance in national events.
"Performances in national tournaments run by BSAF (Billiards and Snooker Association of Fiji) should be awarded in a BSAF Annual Awards Night and not Southern because there are players who play well in the BSAF tournaments and not in the Southern, and some do well in the Southern but not in the BSAF nationals."
The association also gave an Award of Appreciation to Carz and Carz Limited for being its sole sponsor.
The company gave more than $8000, making it the biggest single sponsor of snooker in the country this year.
