UNDER the European Union social mitigation program for 2011, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community is implementing an improvement of key services to agricultural projects in the country.

This will provide direct support to cane farmers and help to improve their practices.

Sairusi Bulai of SPC Land Resources Division said the project enabled them to work directly with Fiji's sugar industry for the first time.

"We hope that lessons learnt and experiences gained will also be useful in SPC's work in other member countries," he said.

"We consider this to be an honour and also a great responsibility and we would like to thank the Fijian Government and other relevant parties for their partnership and close co-operation."

Mr Bulai said they wanted to deepen and enhance operational integration and partnerships with the relevant stakeholders.

"We want to work together to add value and maximise the welfare of the sugarcane farmers and their communities that live in the sugar cane belts," he said.
