A $200,000 municipal market upgrade is one of the first priorities for the Sigatoka Town Council next year.
Special administrator Jay Whyte said the renovation would be funded by government.
"Among the plans we have for next year, this will be one of the most important," he said.
He also said 2013 had been a stellar year for the town and the Christmas season was one of the busiest periods of the year.
The new year will also be marked low key and Mr Whyte confirmed they would not have any major celebrations.
"This is because of the passing away of the Nadroga chief — Na Kalevu, Ratu Sakiusa Makutu, in Nadroga earlier this year.
"We won't be holding any celebrations out of respect."
Mr Whyte also said there were a lot of tourists venturing into Sigatoka for the holidays which was a welcome development because it meant more business for shopkeepers.
