TWO street parties have been scheduled in the Northern Division to welcome the new year.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said they received two permit applications for street parties.

She said police would strictly monitor the street parties and traffic movement during the new year festivities.

"Police operations will be focused on the number of street parties that have been scheduled around the country," she said.

"Our men will be out in numbers from the command group level to the uniform branch to ensure that people are safe during the merrymaking period.

"The traffic department will also continue with their operation on our roads and keeping a close tag on drunk drivers."

Ms Naisoro has called on drivers to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol.

"We urge members of the public to enjoy responsibly during the festive period.

"Those found on the wrong side of the law will be shown no leniency as they will be taken to task."
