THE Sugar Ministry has purchased three tractors which canefarmers can hire.
Ministry permanent secretary Manasa Vaniqi said through the acquisition the government was helping meet the needs of sugarcane farmers.
He said the farmers had often requested for such help.
"These tractors and associated equipment will be utilised by canegrowers at affordable rates to assist them in their land preparation during the main planting months from March to May, and from the second planting window in October and November," said Mr Vaniqi.
The tractors will be put up for lease from the Fiji Sugar Corporation under the supervision of the ministry.
Mr Vaniqi said the government was making this investment to boost cane production beginning next year.
"Next year the government, through my ministry, has made budgetary provisions to purchase another three tractors and three sets of implements for the same purpose," he said.
The government has provided $600,000 in the 2014 National Budget for the purchase of cultivators. The three tractors cost $400,000.
