THE Fiji Police Force is urging members of the public to enjoy responsibly as they countdown to welcome new year.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said this was the time of the year when people would once again be part of drinking parties and other large gatherings to welcome the new year.

"We urge the public to be cautious and monitor their movements from now until the new year," she said.

"We will be out in numbers and will beef up our security especially on New Year's Eve and the fact that there will be two major street parties in Suva.

"We urge people to take extra care and make sure they lock their houses before leaving to avoid disappointments."

Ms Naisoro said those planning on doing unwanted acts during the new year celebrations should think twice as security would be tight and those found breaching the law would be dealt with accordingly.

She also reminded the drivers to avoid incidents as eight people had spent Christmas in the cell.

Ms Naisoro urged drivers not to drive while under the influence of alcohol.
