THE Naitasiri Rugby Union will start its 2014 season with the under-20 off-season training from this Monday.
Coach Digitaki Levaci, who previously mentored the champion Naitasiri club Vunikoro, said they were building the team for the future. He said the union needed a strong foundation and a proper structure to work on.
Levaci added a formidable U20 side would help the Naitasiri senior team to be effective in the provincial competition.
"Off-season training is important to ensure the players are fit and ready for the upcoming season," he said.
"We also need a good foundation to revamp the performance of the main team. The team wasn't that effective in the Digicel Cup competition this year and we hope to improve on that next year.
"Also the Rugby World Cup is in 2015 and the Olympic Games in 2016 so our focus is to also contribute towards the national teams."
Levaci, who had just returned from Australia where he had a stint with the Brisbane age group team, said local players needed to be educated on factors that were part of rugby.
"It's not just rugby but there are many other things like diet, fitness, mental preparation and others that we have to work on together with the physical aspect of the game to ensure we produce complete players."
