NEW washrooms worth $11,000 were opened by the Rakiraki Town Council in order to accommodate the growing demand for better facilities.
Interim special administrator Ralulu Cirikiyasawa said the project was funded by UN Women and the demand was so great that the facilities had to be opened earlier than planned.
"This coincided with our Christmas shopping and we had scheduled for the opening to be on Christmas Eve but the shoppers wanted the facilities to be unveiled as soon as possible," said Mr Cirikiyasawa.
"There are three washrooms for women and three for men. This is a welcome addition because we have always needed new facilities."
Mr Cirikiyasawa also said there were projects in the pipeline for 2014.
One of the major projects undertaken by the council is an overnight accommodation for women who come to sell their produce at the market.
"This is almost 95 per cent complete — there are minor details that the contractors are looking at.
"We want to open the venue before 2014."
