APART from the hyped-up atmosphere in Labasa during Christmas Eve on Tuesday, a team of dedicated police officers patrolled the northern town on a late night patrol.

The team, led by the divisional police commander Northern SSP Naulumatua Lutunacaucau also mingled with passers-by and motorists and advised them on ensuring law and order.

SSP Lutunacaucau said this was part of their special Christmas operation.

"We stop motorists and advice them that if they feel unsafe transporting drunkards, they can always come to the police station so we can get the details of the passengers," he said.

"Also, this is an opportunity for us to conduct our normal road patrols where we check the licences of drivers and the number of passengers they are transporting.

"This operation will continue until next month because we want to make sure that this Christmas and new year is a meaningful one to everyone on Vanua Levu."

SSP Lutunacaucau earlier said a special task force was formed to deal with fresh accident cases and backlog reports.
