MEMBERS of the Rarawai Penang Cane Producers Association will this week decide the future of a pension scheme for farmers aged 70 and above, which was established in May this year.
Executive manager Sanjina Narain said a board meeting would be held on Friday to determine a date for the next general assembly when members would determine how Fairtrade sugar funds should be distributed.
"At the assembly we will ask the members what exactly they want," she said.
"In terms of the pension scheme, we will reassess who the recipients are and which ones should receive funds because the funds have to benefit the most disadvantaged growers."
Ms Narain added the association would look at extending assistance to all growers by providing subsidies for weedicide and fertiliser.
"The funds we receive are limited so we have to ensure all growers and their communities benefit, while looking at the sustainability of our assistance programs as well."
