ATHLETICS coaches in the Suva vicinity have come together to form a coaches association to help with the development of the sport in the country.
The initiative is a part of national long distance coach Maciu Koroitamana's project under the International Coaching Enrichment Program (ICEP).
He returned two months ago from the US where he completed three of the four modules of the ICEP as part of a scholarship offered by the International Olympic Committee.
"Part of my ICEP project was to develop a national coaching structure and I believe this is the beginning of good things to come," Koroitamana said.
"This association will definitely take care of the need to develop coaches because now coaches can work together to help the athletes.
"This has never been done before and we would like to soon have a national association, and associations in different districts to help with the development of athletics in the country."
He said the next development would be a membership drive where they aim to recruit more coaches.
"We need to provide primary and secondary schools quality coaches so that they can produce quality athletes.
"We will have a membership drive where we aim to recruit as many teachers as we can and then train them to be quality coaches or even engage them in coaching courses.
"Invitation is also to former players, athletes, parents, supporters or anyone who wants to help out with coaching."
