A 22-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder following the brutal attacks on a mother and her four children which led to the deaths of 33-year-old Sisi Taofa Patolo and seven-month-old Sarah Patolo near Viseisei Village on Wednesday.
Priya Darshani appeared before Magistrate Peni Dalituicama in a special court hearing at the Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday morning.
Mr Dalituicama told the court that he did not have jurisdiction over such a serious case.
The matter has been transferred to the High Court in Lautoka for mention on January 24, 2014 when the DPP will make a decision on the charges.
The accused was remanded in custody until her next appearance.
In a police statement sent on Wednesday, police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro stated that "the incident is alleged to have occurred as a result of a domestic dispute between the deceased and another woman at a settlement outside Viseisei, Lautoka".
"Police received a report from health authorities that a woman and her child were brought to the hospital and were pronounced dead on arrival.
"The incident is alleged to have occurred sometime between 10am-12pm today (Wednesday).
"The deceased and the suspect were staying in the same house with another 31-year-old man in a de-facto relationship." Ms Naisoro stated.
In a police report sent on Friday night, Ms Naisoro said "the 22-year-old woman alleged to have caused the death of a 33-year-old woman and her seven-month-old baby in Viseisei, Lautoka has been charged."
Ms Naisoro added that "The three children remain admitted in hospital in critical condition."
