A BRACE of goals from Hector Smith Jr helped the Fiji High Performance Unit team beat the visiting Australian Country side 2-1 at the National Hockey Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva yesterday.
Heavy rain in the final 10 minutes of the game was a blessing for the visitors because it affected Fiji's performance and resulted in a goal as Australia bounced back after trailing 0-2 in the final quarter.
Smith gave Fiji an early 1-0 lead before following it up with another from a Leevan Dutta pass in which he easily slotted after edging past the opposition goalkeeper.
Fiji did not have much possession but capitalised on its opportunities.
The Fiji HPU side has a challenge of maintaining its consistency in today's return match.
