BASKETBALL Fiji is keeping its fingers crossed as they bid to host the 2014 FIBA Oceania Youth Championship.

Basketball Fiji made a bid to host the youth event along with other Pacific countries, and officials are optimistic Fiji's bid will be successful.

"We want to host the Oceania Youth Championship," said Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau.

"We have made the bid to FIBA to host the next Oceania youth event. Other Pacific countries too have made the bid but we believe we are in a good position to win this bid and host the event which comes every two years. We have the facilities and with how things look, we can be successful."

Last year's event was held in New Zealand.

Puamau said they would start preparations once FIBA announced the host country. He said the youth competition would be used to expose more young talent.

Puamau earlier revealed Basketball Fiji was looking at booking a spot at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio, Brazil.

"In these types of events, we will want to expose more young players as we build up to our goals. The groundwork starts now," he added.
