IN an attempt to curb businesses operating out of residential areas, the Suva City Council will convert half its depot in Samabula, Suva, into garages for mechanical and other auto works.
Suva special administrator Chandu Umaria said there was a lot of space available at the depot after the Fiji Roads Authority took over roadworks.
"The depot is being under-utilised. There is no longer any need for asphalt plants and gravel area is empty as well," he said.
"This will create employment and to some extent stop people from converting their homes into garages.
"Such practices are violations of a number of acts including health and safety.
"There is also a lot of pollution — the noise from such jobs and grease and oil flowing into drains and creek."
On a positive note, Mr Umaria said there were minimal job losses since FRA came into existence.
He said most workers were relocated with some opting for a redundancy package. The work on the industrial park project is expected to start next year.
