RESIDENTS of a quiet farming settlement near Viseisei, Lautoka, were in shock yesterday — many oblivious to the horrific hacking to death of a 33-year-old woman and her seven-month-old daughter — until police arrived at the scene.
They silently stared from the main road and watched police officers work at the scene.
Three other children of the deceased, aged five to three years, were admitted to the Lautoka Hospital for injuries sustained in the attack.
Police said a 22-year-old woman had been taken in for questioning.
Prakash Chand, 44, said the tragedy was a first in the area.
"I was born here and this is the first time for such a thing to happen in Viseisei," said a shocked Mr Chand.
"All the neighbours in this settlement were shocked to hear of the killings, especially when the young ones were involved."
Annand Prakash, 51, said the victim's family moved to the area less than a year ago.
"The whole Viseisei farming community are shocked as they have never witnessed such an event," said Mr Prakash.
