MORE than 200 people from five villages in the district of Savusavu recently took part in a waste management competition to promote a healthy and hygienic environment.
Organiser and Peace Corps volunteer Christine San-Antonio said last Friday's event was followed by series of workshops conducted by the Cakaudrove Yaubula Management Support Team (CYMST) and USP officials two months ago.
"The CYMST provided guidelines and topic ideas leaving as much room for creativity as possible where participants focused on figuring out ways to manage just one troublesome piece of waste such as glass bottles to designing a major village project like a trash management program," she said.
"Of the nine villages invited to compete in the event, five showed up to present their ideas.
"Each group, comprised women and youths from their respective villages, displayed their designs with enthusiasm showing some impressive, creative, and insightful waste management planning."
