YOUNG Jun Park became the new Suva Open Table Tennis champion when he beat defending champion Christopher Lal in the final yesterday.
Park made a cleansweep in the final at Garden City to win by three straight sets - 11-9, 11-7 and 11-5.
Lal who was also the tournament controller said the final was a tough affair.
"He (Park) had just returned from HPU training in Austria and from the World Cadet Challenge in Slovenia and had a better match experience going into the tournament," he said.
Park also won the under-18 competition on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Zhong Da and Sign Wave-sponsored tournament had a better response in terms of number compared to past years.
"We usually have 50 players but this year we have more than 60 and most of the players were young and this is a good sign for the sport in the country.
"Some top ranked players did not participate but we still managed to have good competition in the matches."
The under-12 title was won by Vicky Wu, Adarsh Chand took out the under 15 and the C-grade title while Nikhil Chand won the B-grade.
