YOUNG Jun Park won the under-18 grade title in the 2013 Zhong Da and Sign Wave Fiji-sponsored Suva Table Tennis Open tournament at Garden City in Raiwai yesterday.
Park, who has just returned from high performance training in Austria and from the World Cadet Challenge in Slovenia, defeated Fiji School for the Deaf player Philip Wing by two straight sets in the final.
Tournament co-ordinator Christopher Lal said the age-group had some exciting competition which forced some upsets.
Seeded players such as Diego Ranuku and Josh Patel of Ba failed to make the finals.
Ranked player Patel lost to Thomas Seru in what was the upset of the day in the preliminary rounds of the competition yesterday.
In the U12 competition, Vicky Wu managed the top finish after winning on countback over Thomas Seru and Young Jae.
Adarsh Chand, a beginner, won the U15 grade after beating Pau Feng 2-1.
"Comparing to last year, the competition this year is quite tough. We have got the underdogs coming up and giving a tough go to the top players," Lal said.
"We have also noted a large number of participants. We have new players who have drawn interest from our beginner's clinics we have been holding on weekdays after school and during the school holidays as well."
The B-grade and C-grade finals were underway last night when this edition went to press.
The A-grade competition will start today at 8am.
