THE national road death toll has increased to 40 after a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle yesterday.
Police said the number of people who died in road accidents for the same period last year was equivalent as this year.
Yesterday's fatality saw a man being hit at Namaka in Nadi by a vehicle driven by a security officer.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the driver of the vehicle was in police custody.
"The incident is alleged to have taken place close to 9am in Namaka when the deceased, a pedestrian, was bumped by a vehicle driven by a security officer," she said.
"The suspect conveyed the victim to the Nadi Hospital however he unfortunately died."
Ms Naisoro said the suspect driver called the Namaka Police Station at 11am and reported the matter.
She said police investigations into the latest road fatality were continuing.
