A LAUTOKA youth group has begun involving itself in a range of activities designed to engage members in constructive work and community development.
Vakatora Youth, made up of young people residing at the Public Rental Board's Vakatora Housing project, spent Friday cleaning up the residential area.
Pauliasi Matawalu from the PRB said the clean-up exercise was the first in a series of projects the youth group would be engaged in.
"We are relying on these youths to keep the environment clean and we are involving them in community work so that they are not idle," he said.
"We also advise the youth members about the rules and regulations of living in housing projects like Vakatora."
Mr Matawalu said the PRB facilitated activities designed to empower youths and other residents living in PRB housing projects.
One of the most popular was the establishment of wi-fi internet connectivity at housing projects in Lautoka.
"Residents in Vakatora and Natokowaqa housing have had access to wi-fi internet since the beginning of the year.
"We put up the infrastructure with the assistance of Telecom Fiji and for the residents to get internet access, they have to purchase cards from our PRB office.
"This was designed to empower the youth by giving them hands on access and experience with modern technology."
