HUNDREDS of people turned up yesterday to pay their last respects to a father and daughter who died when the taxi they were in plunged into a river earlier this week.

Francis Deo, 46, and his daughter Samantha Deo, 11, were cremated at Vatuwaqa Cemetery in Suva.

They left Suva to drop a family friend at Nadi International Airport and were supposed to stay at a relative's place in Tunalia, Nadi on Sunday when they went missing.

A search was carried out for the missing father and daughter and the taxi Mr Deo was driving. The taxi was found in a river at Aralevu in Nadi on Wednesday.

Samantha's body was inside the mangled wreck of the car while Mr Deo's body was found some distance away a bit later.

The funeral service was held at their home at Veisida Place in four miles, Nasinu.

Land Transport Authority CEO Naisa Tuinaceva and Fiji Women's Crisis Centre executive director Shamima Ali were among those who attended the funeral.

Police are still investigating how the taxi ended in the river.
