Refrain from overloading vessels, MSAF warns

Update: 6:24PM THE Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji has sent out a stern warning to all vessel owners and operators to refrain from overloading their vessels or face the consequences.

MSAF CEO Neale Slack said he had issued a marine notice to all vessel owners and operators warning them against overloading.

Under the Marine act, fines for doing so are $5000 and two years imprisonment and an additional fine of $500 for each person in excess of the permitted passengers, he said.

Under the Marine Act 1986 the CEO may also suspend or cancel a Masters Certificate if the master is deemed unfit to be unfit to be the holder of the certificate.
