A VOLUNTEER with the Western Disabled Persons Association says one of the biggest issues facing people with disabilities was their inability to secure employment.
Ravindra Mani said employers tended to look at people's disabilities rather than their aptitude and ability.
"I am looking for full-time employment and instead of sitting at home and waiting, I decided to work as a volunteer and assist the disabled people in the West," the 26-year-old said.
"I completed 15 out of 20 units at USP while pursuing a degree in accounting, finance and information services but despite my qualifications and enthusiasm it has been very difficult because employers looked at my disabilities rather than what I have to offer."
Mr Mani was among a group of participants who attended a civil society organisation capacity building workshop hosted by AusAID's Fiji Community Development Program in Lautoka yesterday.
The workshop was designed to assist CSOs improve their media communication skills.
Participants learnt how to write media releases and how to send the most relevant information for publication purposes.
