DESPITE strong finishes in the over 35 male shortboard and open women's longboard categories, Fiji failed to win the Melanesian Surfing Cup over the weekend.

Lami's Foy Chung won the over 35 male shortboard category while Hannah Bennett won the open women's longboard and got the third placing in the open women's shortboard.

Vanuatu scooped the Melanesian Cup with New Caledonia in second spot while Fiji settled for third place finish in the three-day competition which ended on Saturday.

Fijian surfing champions Aca Raculo and Isei Tokovou lost in the semis of the open male category after failing to find high scoring waves in difficult conditions.

"It's been great to compete against my Melanesian cousins," Tokovou said in a statement from Fiji Surfing Association.

"We really pushed each other to do our best.

"It's so important for us Fijians to compete as much as possible. I learned so much from the experience."

The 4th Annual Melanesian Surf Cup had 47 competitors from Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Samoa, Guam and Fiji taking part.

The association thanked its cash sponsors Tourism Fiji and the Fiji National Sports Commission along with its corporate supporters Namotu Island Resort and Tavarua Island Resort for supporting the competition.

Corona was first time sponsors of surfing in Fiji via provision of product and prizes.
