AS expected, Candidate Master Calvin Prasad became the new national chess champion yesterday.
Prasad, who was the outright leader on points, beat Ashish Gautam in the final round of competition at the Fiji Olympic House in Suva.
He finished with 7.5 points out of eight after winning seven games and drawing one.
National Junior champion Ronald Terubea finished second on 5.5 points while CM Manoj Kumar came third with 5 points in the JR White-sponsored competition.
Fiji Chess Federation president Dr Virgilio de Asa said Kumar's loss in the last round to Keez Terubea cost him the second place.
"Calvin was leading with one round to go and even if he had lost that match, he would have won the title but he won the title with a win," he said.
"John Caldera finished fourth with 4.5 points while 12-year-old Menash Fareed was fifth with 3.5 points," Dr Virgilio.
In other matches of the final round, John and Menash drew while Ronald beat Noel Adricula and Goru Arvind was on a bye.
"This was the final event for the year and early next year, we will have our annual general meeting where some new officer bearers could be elected," Dr Virgilio added.
