A JUVENILE was handed a 12-month imprisonment sentence which was suspended for five years yesterday for raping a minor.
The juvenile, 17, had raped his 11-year-old first cousin earlier this year.
The accused was convicted of two counts of rape by High Court judge Justice Prabaharan Kumararatnam in Suva.
The court heard that on February 13 this year, the accused tricked the young girl into believing that someone in his home wanted to see her.
When the victim walked into the kitchen looking for his mother, the accused then locked the kitchen door and raped her.
On the second count, when the victim was on her way to have her shower at 7.30pm on March 22, she heard the accused calling her.
The court heard that she went to him and the accused asked her to enter the kitchen where he raped her for the second time.
The matter only came to light after the victim's teacher informed her parents of her behaviour in school.
"Probation officer is requested to arrange proper counselling programs for the juvenile until he completes his education," Justice Kumararatnam said.
"Breach of any condition laid down by the probation officer to be reported to this court for an appropriate order".
